A Message from Your President

President Barry Smith

Dear Alumni and Friends:

Although it has been many years since I graduated from Southern, I’ve always been amazed how the University is still with me each day. I cherish my memories of SIU and know that you do too. Being a Saluki is an extraordinary experience filled with connections you will have for a lifetime. That binds us together in a unique way – no matter where we now call home.

With the many challenges facing higher education, there has never been a better time for us to be fully engaged as alumni. I encourage you to seek opportunities to reconnect with your alma mater at one of the many great alumni events on or off campus, serve as mentor to a current student, or get involved in a club or chapter near you.

I also hope you are able to soon return to campus for the 2013 Homecoming Weekend. Our Homecoming Celebration is one of our signature events, as we welcome back Salukis from all eras and honor some special individuals who bring distinction to themselves and SIU through outstanding professional and personal achievement.

When I played basketball for the Salukis, I knew that our team could only be as strong as the commitment of the players who wore the maroon and white.  That same experience has taught me that the SIU Alumni Association is only as strong as members who support this organization’s many programs and initiatives.

If you are currently a member of the SIU Alumni Association, I thank you for your continued support.  I also urge anyone who is not yet a member to please consider being a part of our team. We can do great things when we all work together.

Yours for Southern,

Barry Smith ’80
