The SIU Alumni Association Web site at www.siualumni.com, its sub-domains and related sites are used to communicate with alumni, students, University staff and the public, promote events and programs, offer services and gather information about users. The purpose of this document is to educate and inform users of the policies regarding the SIU Alumni Association Web sites, including how the SIU Alumni Association collects and uses information.
Cookies and Technology
Cookies are pieces of information that a Web site transfers to a computer hard disk for record-keeping purposes. Cookies make a Web site more useful by storing preferable information related to a particular site. The use of cookies is an industry standard, and many major web sites use them to provide useful features for their customers.
Cookies in and of themselves do not personally identify users, although they do identify a user's computer. Most browsers are initially set up to accept cookies. If you prefer, you can set a browser to refuse cookies. However, you may not be able to take full advantage of a Web site if you do so.
The SIU Alumni Association utilizes cookies, but the information that is collected is not personal information that would identify an individual. In addition, the SIU Alumni Association’s Web server automatically gathers information regarding browser type, operating system, IP address and the domain name used by the visitor. This information may be used to analyze trends, to create statistics for the purpose of determining technical design specifications and to identify system performance or problem areas. Currently, the SIU Alumni Association does not utilize this information but has the right to do so in the future.
Through the use of the Update Account Info, Update School info, and Update Personal Info forms, users have the opportunity to change their information and preferences regarding the information that they authorize to be displayed in the Directory. Messages are sent through the Online Community via blind e-mail, leaving the option to reveal an e-mail address up to each recipient.
The SIU Alumni Association occasionally collects personal information through various forms throughout its site, primarily for event registrations, membership applications and information requests. The type of information collected can include, but is not limited to, name, address, phone number(s), e-mail address(es), graduation year and college/school/department.
To prevent unauthorized access, maintain data accuracy, and ensure the appropriate use of information, the SIU Alumni Association has put into place appropriate physical, electronic and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information it collects online.
The SIU Alumni Association site may contain links to external Web sites. The SIU AA is not responsible for the privacy practices or content of such linked Web sites.
The SIU Alumni Association is committed to ensuring the privacy of personal information. The SIU Alumni Association may share personal information gathered from its sites with others outside the SIU Alumni Association and/or the University, when: authorized by law, permitted under general SIU AA and Southern Illinois University policies, authorized by an approved SIU Alumni Association contract. It is clearly stated on the SIU Alumni Association Web site(s) that such information will be shared and the user indicates consent by providing the information. Consent is otherwise given, or authorized for good cause by the President and Executive Director of the Southern Illinois University Alumni Association.

The Division of Institutional Advancement at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is committed to maintaining the trust and confidence of our alumni, donors, and friends. An important benefit of your affiliation with Institutional Advancement (which includes the SIU Alumni Association and the SIU Foundation) and Southern Illinois University is the opportunity to receive offers for products and services from our select affiliates. For this reason we want you to understand how we protect your privacy. If you are an alumnus, we obtain your information from your University student record. We also obtain nonpublic personal information about you from surveys, transcript requests, communication/activities with university departments and personal exchange. This information will be used to support Alumni Association and university programs.
Only those people who need it to perform those responsibilities are authorized to have access to your information. You may withdraw from any of our services by notifying the SIU Alumni Association at (618) 453-2408.
