Welcome to the new SIU Alumni Center
After more than a year of planning and renovation, the new Alumni Center officially opened during the 2019 Homecoming Weekend.
The Alumni Center is located in the C-wing of Woody Hall and is open from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
For more information about using or reserving space, contact the Association’s main office at (618) 453-2408.
The front lobby is a modern, open space to welcome visitors. The television screen displays a constant stream of information from the Association and elsewhere on campus. Glass displays built into the reception counter exhibits an assortment of notable items and awards for the Association. Walk outside the front lobby, you’ll be facing the north side of Altgeld Hall and the roundabout in front of the University Museum in Faner Hall.
While not a full-service kitchen, this space is equipped for caterers to prepare food for serving during Association events. It’s equipped with a large-size refrigerator, ice maker, warming racks, stainless steel countertops, and sinks.
Many alumni have authored books or achieved awards during their careers. Some have generously donated these items to the Association over the years. Before, it had no place to exhibit many of them. Now, with the addition of the library space, these items can be displayed. The space is also intended as a resource for alumni or other community members to research university history, as it houses a number of historical documents, including a back catalog of SIU Alumni magazines and the Obelisk yearbook.
Main Conference Room / Business Center
These adjoining rooms are spaces for both alumni and Association staff use. Staff members host meetings with other campus departments here, but the room is also available to alumni who wish to conduct in-person meetings while visiting campus. The space is equipped with some of the latest in video conferencing technology.
The business center can either be opened or closed off from the conference space. The intent of this room is to serve as a quiet, comfortable space for alumni to work. The space also houses two public computer terminals. Windows along the north wall of the room overlook the central patio area of Woody Hall.
Both rooms are stocked with temporary furniture at the moment. New furnishings, secured by alumni Mark Stenftenagel ’73 and Janet Caponigro ’86, will arrive in the spring of 2020.
Student Alumni Council
The center also, for the first time, gives the Student Alumni Council -- the Association’s Registered Student Organization on campus – a base of operations for the various volunteer projects the group conducts across campus. The council also hosts regular meetings in the room.
The media center is intended to help share the stories of SIU alumni across a variety of print and digital platforms. In here, podcasts and videos are recorded and edited. There is also a photo backdrop for alumni to get professional-quality photos and headshots. The black paneling on the walls and ceiling are for sound absorption and were installed with consultation from members of WSIU Radio.
Class of 1967 Patio
This open-air patio space in the center of the Woody Hall complex was a gift to the university from the Class of 1967. Renovation on the project began in 2018. Today, the patio is an attractive and expansive space perfect for outdoor gatherings.
